Before beginning, take time to review the article and timeline I have provided to familiarize yourself with the causes, ideologies, and progression of the Civil Rights Movement

Elementary and Middle School InstructionAccording to Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE), The Civil Rights Movement is not expected to be taught in kindergarten through 5th grade. Middle school instruction does not require instruction either, as their expectations take students through American history up until the Civil War.
High School InstructionThe Michigan High School Content Expectations (HSCE) identify The Civil Rights Movement as an instructional standard. This topic will generally show up in a U.S. History course required by all students for graduation.
How Michigan Measures UpWhile content expectations may outline when The Civil Rights Movement is supposed to be taught, Michigan students are missing out on critical instruction. According to a survey conducted by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Michigan's expected teaching of the Civil Rights Movement received an "F" grade.
